Non-Wood Framing
Custom decks and outdoor structures designed, engineered, and built to perform long after installation.
Advanced structural options
In certain applications, traditional lumber framing is not the optimal solution. For projects that demand extended service life, increased structural consistency, or resistance to environmental exposure, non-wood framing systems offer measurable advantages.
These systems are selected when conditions, design goals, or longevity expectations exceed what wood framing is best suited to deliver.
Why non-wood framing
Non-wood structural materials do not absorb moisture, do not shrink as they acclimate, and do not degrade due to rot or insect activity. As a result, they provide a level of predictability that is difficult to achieve with organic materials.
This stability supports tighter construction tolerances, more consistent load paths, and long-term dimensional accuracy.
Our non-wood framing systems
We offer several non-wood framing options, selected based on structural requirements, environmental conditions, and project scope.
Steel framing
Steel framing systems from Fortress Building Products provide exceptional strength, rigidity, and resistance to movement. Steel is well suited for long spans, elevated structures, and applications where load control and structural precision are critical.
Aluminum framing
Aluminum framing systems from TimberTech offer a balance of strength and weight reduction. Aluminum does not rot, warp, or absorb moisture, making it a reliable option for projects where corrosion resistance and dimensional stability are priorities.
Fiberglass-based
structural lumber
Fiberglass-based structural lumber from Owens Corning delivers high strength with minimal thermal movement and no susceptibility to moisture or decay. This material is often used where long-term stability and environmental resistance are essential.
When non-wood framing is appropriate
Non-wood framing systems cost more than traditional lumber and are considered an upgrade. They are selected when a client desires the performance benefits these materials offer and the project budget supports their use.
These systems are implemented deliberately, based on structural requirements, environmental conditions, and long-term expectations rather than as a default framing choice.
Integration with our build standards
Non-wood framing systems are fully compatible with our foundation, decking, and railing standards. When used, they are incorporated as part of a complete structural system, not as isolated components.
Material selection is guided by performance requirements and long-term durability, not preference.
A note on material choice
While most decks are framed using KDAT lumber, non-wood framing remains an important option within our system. The appropriate framing solution is determined through consultation, based on site conditions, structural needs, and ownership goals.
